Wildlife poaching in Malaysia on the increase

Wildlife poaching in Malaysia is increasing, and it’s worrying. Today there was a report in the local newspaper about this disturbing trend. This is a reflection of the ever increasing decadence of mankind, and is but one signal or sign that the world as we know it, may not last longer than a few more decades (from now). Change of site name

This is just a quick post to notify all visitors to Jungle Diary, that the new name and address of this site is now Rainforest Journal.

Why a change of name/address? Well, I feel that the new name better reflects the character of my site, which is not so much as a “diary” per se, as I do not have as much time these days to be venturing into the jungle/rainforest, although I definitely do so, when time and resources permit.

Visitors may well notice that some photos I post will also be old, or scanned photos; these are from my own personal photo archives, back in the days when we used SLRs, and not DSLRs.

Basically, nothing has changed content-wise, save for the new URLs, so do look forward to new postings from me soon. 🙂

Johannesteijsmannia magnifica

Malaysia is one of the centers of palm diversity in the world. These four species are Johannesteijsmannia altifrons, Johannesteijsmannia lanceolata, Johannesteijsmannia magnifica, and Johannesteijsmannia perakensis. Continue Reading →

Day trip at Penang National Park

Another location where similar forest exists is at Penang National Park. The park sits at the north-west corner of Penang Island and is the smallest national park in Peninsular Malaysia at only around 2500 hectares, but nonetheless is one of the most interesting, as it contains a myriad range of coastal habitats. Are the trees dying?

Are tree mortality rates higher now? One just needs to pay more attention to one’s surroundings and it will be obvious that trees are dying faster now, compared to 20-30 years ago. This phenomenon is real, and it’s something I have been observing for the past decade. Of late, I have seen many trees simply die off in forests that were absolutely not disturbed at all, and this occurred after sudden leaf flushing and then, the trees were dead! Continue Reading →
