Taman Botani Negara Shah Alam (Bukit Cerakah)

Taman Botani Negara Shah Alam (TBNSA) is an area of forests combined with plantations/botanical gardens that lies towards the north of Shah Alam city. The place also goes by the name of Bukit Cahaya Sri Alam, while the forest reserve itself is named Bukit Cerakah Forest Reserve. Previously, the park was named Taman Pertanian Malaysia (it’s confusing, I know). I will still refer to this place as Bukit Cerakah, after the name of the forest reserve, originally. Sungai Menyala Forest Reserve, Port Dickson

Recently, I paid a visit to Sungai Menyala Forest Reserve, a most interesting site for nature lovers to explore, especially since it is located so near to an urban area, i.e. Port Dickson. The entire forest reserve used to sprawl over a large area in the past, but today consists of an isolated patch totaling 1300 hectares of mostly old secondary lowland forest, surrounded by oil palm plantations, an army camp, farms and villages. Ayer Hitam Forest Reserve, Puchong

The Ayer Hitam forest reserve in Puchong is one of the most precious tracts of remaining lowland dipterocarp forest in highly urbanized Selangor state. Originally covering 4270 hectares and gazetted as a forest reserve way back in 1906, it has suffered from a series of de-gazettements throughout the years, until it is now only some 1200 hectares. Even this is being reduced as I speak, as developers continue to quietly eat away at the borders of the reserve. The forest is now totally surrounded by “concrete jungle”. Continue Reading →

Kuala Selangor Nature Park

The Kuala Selangor Nature Park (or KSNP for short) is one of the best conserved tracts of coastal mangrove swamp forest on the West Coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Its local name is Taman Alam Kuala Selangor (Taman Alam means “nature park”). Although it is only 240 hectares in size, there is no doubt it plays a big role in protecting a strip of coastal mangrove, while serving as a nature education center. Besides the KSNP, the other significant tract of conservation area of mangrove forest is the Matang Mangrove Forest in Perak which is over 40,000 hectares in size. Kuala means “estuary” or “river mouth” and the KSNP takes its name after that river – Selangor river. Continue Reading →

Bukit Seraya Lookout Point

The Bukit Seraya (Seraya Hill) Lookout Point is situated approximately halfway on the 14 km jeep track/road between Sungai Relau and Kuala Juram, in Taman Negara. It is one of the many hills that the road crosses along the way. There is a concrete tower built on the summit of the hill beside the road, and you have to first climb a flight of steps to reach the top of the hill and then onwards to the top of the tower, which is 3 stories high.
